XTERRA Trail Race

Back in September I ran at the XTERRA Trail Running National Championships in Snowbasin, UT. The title is a little misleading; I ran the 10k that was a precursor to the half-marathon national championships. It was my first trail race, and 10k for that matter. Running on a trail in the mountains is a beautiful and unique experience; it adds a sense of adventure and exploration to an otherwise painful sport! I had a lot of fun, and ended up placing third overall. So, my dad and I decided we were going to go to Southern California in October and race another XTERRA race. We did just that, and had an amazing trip visiting my grandparents. I won the 12k, and my dad finished just a few spots behind. I think it is safe to say that I will be doing a lot more trail running next summer! Get into it!

As all photographers know, taking an absurd amount pictures tends yield better results. Maybe that is just something I tell myself to justify taking my camera everywhere. While vacationing in MI this year, I took hundreds of photos in attempts to capture Northern Michigan's beauty so that I could share it with all of you. When I got home, I faced the daunting task of narrowing down these photos to a manageably sized photo album. I put some of my favorites on Facebook... click here to check it out!

I have been neglecting the blog quite a bit this summer. I am not surprised, nor apologetic. You see, if the blog is being neglected, it usual means I have been too busy doing other, more worthwhile things! That being said, I would like to post a little more regularly.

I am in Michigan! I will give you a brief rundown on what's been going on since the last post. I have been working five days a week for the Alta Visitor's Bureau to help them get their new site up and running. You can check it out here. I have also been working for the Associated Students of the University of Utah as a Marketing Associate Director. We have been getting posters, social networking, videos, and other marketing stuff ready for the coming school year. Hopefully I will be able to post some of my projects up here shortly because some of them are pretty neat! In between work I have been golfing quite a bit. If you have never been before, do it! That pretty much wraps up the month of July!

Last Thursday my family flew to Detroit, and we drove to my aunt's farm, just outside of Lansing. I love coming out to the countryside and being a little bit isolated for a few days. It feels great to be surrounded by nothing more than trees, grass, and... corn. On Saturday we loaded up the rental minivan and drove up to our cottage on Long Lake, near the Grand Traverse Bay. Since then we have been sailing, boating, swimming, biking, running, and of course, eating. My aunts are superb cooks, and beyond that we tend to eat out a lot up here. I have been working out daily to try to keep off the pounds! Needless to say, life is good. This is the perfect way to spend summer; I look forward to it every year.

It's over! I feel a little relieved, a little tired, and very grateful for the opportunity to run in such a fun race. Team 'Why Not' crossed the line Saturday, just after 1 p.m., some 28 hours after we began the long journey from Logan to Park City. Our team consisted of several moms, dads, and a few college kids, brought together by a common love for running.

The Ragnar relay isn't so much of a race, as it is a big party. A parade of 13,000 people streamed through small towns and canyon roads, hooting and hollering the whole way. I was stunned by the number of vans and runners involved in the race, each one decorated in some sort of outrageous fashion. At any given point along the route, there would be an uninterrupted stream of runners for upwards of 3 hours! Along the way there were 36 exchanges, where the baton would be passed from one runner to the next. Each of the major exchanges had dozens of tents and vendors, bringing a festival-like atmosphere to the race.
I ran three different legs, separated by about seven hours each. My first leg was a 3.4 run that wound through the Ogden Valley, which consists of small farms, rolling, green hills, and snow-capped peaks. It may just be the prettiest place in Utah! Here are some cell phone shots...

My second leg took place at 1 a.m., in a mountain pass just south of Oakley. I have to admit, it was probably the best run of my life. With a full moon shining above, I ran seven fast miles, picking off 62 runners as I went along (we had a game going). The combination of running in the dark, the cool temps, and silence made the run feel very tranquil. If you get the chance to run late at night, do it!

After one hour of sleep and lots of driving, the sun peered over the mountains and it was time to run my final leg in the Heber Valley. It was a nice 5 mile run through farm country, and I savored every step. After I finished my final leg, my teammates ran 3,000 ft up Guardsman's pass, and down into Park City where the finish line was waiting! It was a fantastically good time, and I highly recommend it to everyone, runner or not!

RAGNAR

The Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay goes off tomorrow morning, and for the first time, I will be amongst the competitors! A few weeks ago my friend Ross asked me to join his squad, so I started training. It took a few runs to get used to working out daily, but I feel somewhat prepared for the 188-mile relay race, which will carry our twelve-person team from Logan to Park City over a 24-hour period. I'm super excited to start running regularly again, after taking the past year off!

Snowpine

High above Salt Lake City, deep in the heart of the Wasatch, a rustic collection of snow laden stone buildings comprises the town of Alta. These lodges, homes, churches, and stores are transformed into intimate community by the towering peaks surrounding them. This is where I grew up, spending winters, summers, and everything in between skiing and hiking the mountains. We Marshalls even call Alta home on Christmas Eve, enjoying dinner and presents at the Snowpine Lodge. Some of my fondest memories lay within that quaint lodge, so when we went back there a few weeks ago I was overwhelmed with a childlike sense of magic and excitement. The lodge’s entrance is on the edge of the highway, and is certainly unassuming; you might miss it if you didn’t know what to look for.

After climbing down some three flights of stairs, which give off a lovely pine scent, you find yourself in a small lobby which consists of a stone hearth, several sofas, and windows overlooking the ski resort. A French family on holiday is gathered around the fire, softly retelling stories of the day spent skiing.

The dining hall is directly adjacent, and is full of rosy cheeked guests delighting in a tastefully crafted meal by the owner/chef of the lodge. Everyone is content, simply happy to be there.

If you are looking for a place to escape the everyday routine, Alta is the place to go. Going up there is like taking a step back in time, to me at least.

The Highest Standard

A few years ago a good friend of mine, Andres Bosque, and I started collaborating on photo projects. Driven by creativity and a passion for photography, The Highest Standard emerged. After a year-long hiatus, THS is back. We are proud to introduce our newest project, the Snuggie Series. We decided to take the popular couch accessory to a whole new level, placing it in abstract locations and extreme environments. So far, the Snuggie has been featured in a downtown alleyway, on the slopes of Alta, and now on Brigham Young himself.

Hey friends!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas; I sure did! It is always nice to take a break and spend some quality time with family and friends. I made it up to Alta yesterday, and with well over a foot of new snow, some great skiing was had. I have been focusing on enjoying skiing rather than filming, so I don't have anything to show you at the moment. However, FS: Episode 2 should be dropping before the end of the break, so watch out for that! Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, which means it is time for Alta's annual Torchlight Parade. Thousands of people (some intoxicated) ski down the mountain with fire. It is sure to be a good time! I will bring up my camera, so that you too may enjoy it from the comforts of your home.

The last few weeks have been super busy, with the conclusion of my first college semester, the beginning of the ski season, and numerous friends leaving on missions. The excitement of all these things has led me to neglect my blog; thankfully not to many of you read it regularly, so it's ok! This season I have decided to step up the production level of videos and photos, in hopes of gaining some exposure in the local ski community. More than anything else, making videos is fun! So, I am proud to introduce FRESHMAN SEASON, a series of videoblogs and webisodes. Episode One (below) is the first installment of the series. Coming Home

November 19th was one of the most epic days in recent history. It was marked by the long-awaited release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1", the opening day of Alta Ski Resort, and it happened to be Kathy Kurzhals' birthday. Below is a video account of one of those events, the first day of skiing at Alta. The weather was a bit drab, but Tanner and I had a great time re-accustoming ourselves to the sport. My mind is in the mountains. Out of the three hours spent 'studying' today, I have spent about an hour and a half looking at ski-related pictures, videos, facebook profiles, and blogs. I can't get skiing out of my head! Now that I'm outside in the sun, I remember that it is still summer (sort of), and that skiing is still months away. Of course, now I have wasted even more time writing about the ordeal..... Cheers!

I felt vane enough taking a picture of myself, so I decided smiling at my computer in the middle of a quad seemed unnecessarily conspicuous. Thus, this self portrait is of a stone-faced studier!

Climate Change

In one of my classes today we had a guest lecturer, Dr. Chapman of the University's geothermal research department. Dr. Chapman discussed the topic of climate change, as well as how earth scientists construct knowledge. I had always known about the troubling issue of climate change, and all the political clout surrounding it, but I have never realized how irrefutable it really is. Observations in air/ground temperatures, sea levels, C02 levels, and ice cap sizes from the past 300 years all conclusively support that the earth's climate has changed, about one degree since the Industrial Revolution. C02 levels are at an all time high, and this rate in temperature change is unprecedented in the earth's history. It should be indisputable that the earth is in fact warming. Still, some critics claim that in the past six years the earth's average temperature has cooled, which is true. What they fail to acknowledge is that this is simply a year to year deviance, and that the five year average over the last 150 years has been consistently rising.

I don't understand why one would even attempt to refute evidence that is triangulated by numerous observations, accounting for discrepancies in time and space (pockets of cooling, etc.) What motivation do critics have for trying to disclaim climate change? I have some sympathy for those that contend that such cycles are natural. It's true, the earth has natural heating and cooling cycles, as we all know. But what is different about the current change in climate is the rate of change. Concentration levels of C02 are at an all time high as plants are only able to reabsorb about 1/2 of what we are producing, so the concentration is increasing at a staggering amount. These levels are limiting the amount of solar energy reflected back into space, resulting in temperature rises on earth. Regardless if you believe the cycle is natural or not, preparations for a warmer earth are necessary.

What can we do? There are several steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint. Try biking or mass transit instead of driving. Eat locally grown food (the average # of miles from production to plate is around 1,500, using lots of energy to transport it). Support reforestation, which helps carbon reabsorption (besides, trees are pretty). Support literacy programs in developing nations, which can help return population growth to a healthy level (more people = more energy). Support alternative energy production, such as windmills (on average can power 3,000 - 4,000 households). Study low-energy impact nations with high standards of living, such as Denmark, Sweden, and others. Most of all, DO SOME RESEARCH! Learn about the issues, and make CONSCIOUS decisions.

College means more. More than studying. More than friends. More than anything you could ever imagine. College is more than school, it is an entire experience, and it's unlike anything I have been immersed in before. While spending my first few days on campus, I have discovered so many different opportunities. Intramural sports, clubs, fraternities, student government, academic groups, classes, recreation centers, and people all vie for precious time in every student's schedule. While in high school I was able to be fully involved in many things, including three varsity sports, FBLA, and IB, among others. However, I am currently overwhelmed by the seemingly infinite amount of options. What I have gathered from my first day of school is that "It Means More." I am looking forward to exploring what exactly "More" is going to mean for me. Good luck to all my fellow students starting school soon!

Over the past few weeks I have discovered a new passion for football, or soccer as we so fondly call it in America. The World Cup, as do most global sporting events, has captured my imagination. International competition seems to unite nations while providing an epic stage to display the skills of each nation, creating a truly captivating environment that I simply can't pull myself away from. The energy and enthusiasm of the players, fans, and even the jolly English announcers add to the excitement of the sport. Subsequently, I resolved to familiarize myself further with this, the world's greatest sport, through friendly matches with mates, and avid support of our local club, Real Salt Lake. I hope that some of you will accompany me on this journey; I would love to see soccer become as popularized as football is in Europe, South America, and Africa.

The site will be undergoing some summer inspired renovations in the next few days. I am focusing on doing the same thing in my own life right now, getting ready to move on from school, getting stoked for the summer! Graduation is in less than two weeks, marking the end of my high school experience. As one could imagine, I am very excited to finish school, and move on to college, but I am feeling a twinge of bittersweet sentiment. There are so many people I may not see again after graduation! Still, I am thankful for all the fantastic memories of the past three years. Well, I'm in school so I gotta go.

I just realized that I have been neglecting this blog for quite some time! Life has been super busy the last few weeks, with track concluding and IB/AP tests daily. Still, I have found time to enjoy the SPRINGY weather we have been having. One more week (last test) and I will be a changed man! Life is so good. A week has gone by, like a blink of the eye. This entire year has been no different. It seems like it was just summer, and yet, the same season lays just around the bend. In many ways it will be different from the last, and in many ways I hope it will be the same. During the last few days I have found myself reflecting on past eight months almost constantly. It is interesting to watch life unfold right before your eyes. In one weeks period, your everything can turn upside down. Someone you talk to everyday can suddenly disappear, and someone you have never spoken to can become your close friend. It is best to live life in the present, aware of the relationships and people around you, striving to be your best at each and every moment. Someday you may wake up, wishing you had another chance. Live life with no regrets, whether it be in the classroom, on the track, in your relationships, or most importantly, doing His work.

Something New

I woke up this morning feeling optimism. After a night of deliberation, arguing, prayer, and acceptance, I feel ready to start a new chapter. My mind has been cleared, and I can finally see the future. It is bright! All forms of drama have been exhausted, and will disappear forever. It is a waste of time, and its not how we were meant to live. The Fruit of the Spirit is JOY! JOY! And I feel it. I love that security. I hope she feels the same way, because I'm ready to get my friend back.

I really enjoy skiing. I really do! When the weekend rolls around and I can't ski because of a hurt back, angry coach, loads of homework, track meet, or other obligation, I suffer. Often times I fill this void by reading up on various industry blogs, which often contain exciting stories of travels, gorgeous pictures from ski photographers (my dream job), and three-minute park edits. These edits are an interesting phenomenon. Skiers are not gangsters. They don't deal drugs, they don't live in the projects, and they certainly don't pack heat. Still, almost every pro park skier releases monthly edits of themselves on youtube, with the hardest soundtracks and thuggish attire. Even more astonishing... I enjoy them!! Here is a rather mild example (I chose it because there are no dirty words). The skier lives in Norway, I believe.

Freedom

The tires race down the black pavement, still damp from the passing storm. Brad Marshall is sitting behind the wheel, his eyes returning to the long stretch of open highway sprawling in front of his white Subaru. As the car travels across the grassy plain, dark skies give way to a magnificent purple radiance from the West. The green lush that lines the road signifies the arrival of spring, not a minute too early. A clear destination in sight, he steps on the accelerator and smiles to himself, aware of the joyful scene that awaits....

That's just about how I feel right now. I don't mean to imitate my friend's sentiments, but spring fever is in the air. Track is starting, some old and new faces in the mix. After an exhausting week, I finally feel as if I can relax a little and unbutton the collar. Other issues resolved with resolve, freedom has graced my mind, and I have welcomed it in to stay.

I like to express myself. I'm not sure why, but I have a constant desire to speak, whisper, sign, mouth, photograph, draw, act, sing, play, or scream the innards of my brain for the world to experience. Fortunately, I have this blog to use as a means of expression on occasion. Right now, a plethora of things are swimming through my mind and I think I want to share them with you! First off, what an awesome weekend! It started out with two energetic kids named Kelsey and Blake. Friday night we decided that we must have an adventure. So, we drove. To Heriman. To visit Phoungers. After experiencing the glory that was the secluded Le backyard, we returned to our beds for a restful night of sleep, which was much appreciated after an absolutely bonkers week known as Mr. Hillcrest. That is where Saturday ties in. The day consisted of waffles, Alice in Wonderland, a rock concert, stompin', and Hitch. I must say, Alice in Wonderland was quite lovely, I thoroughly enjoyed it. That movie is right up my alley; craziness, England, and obscure adventures. In other words, all my favorite things! Anyways, after filming an awesome Taylor Swift parody (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snMNx1gD1J0) with two of my best mates, the Mr. Hillcrest week ended well with another mate of mine, TK!, winning and myself finishing in the top five. Thus concludes my weekend synapsis. I hope I have not bored the reader too much, but I must go on.
I considered poetry. But that seemed.... a little fruity. Sorry Blake. Then, I turned to photography. Pictures can express so many things that words cannot, but words can also express so much that pictures cannot. Even though they do make a post much more interesting to look at. Sorry Albert. With no poetry or pictures, I am forced to express my thoughts through babble. Most of this should not make the final draft of the post, but I am much to lazy and underpaid to go back and delete useless sentences like this. Time for the meaty vague stuff that you all will be asking me about later. I am frustrated! Now don't get me wrong, I am a very happy man. I absolutely love every aspect of my life! Being a 18 year-old senior in high school is very... invigorating. It only happens once so ya gotta live it up. But there is this constant inkling of something that is tickling my mind. Its like when you have your first crush in the second grade, and all you can think about is her. You go to school everyday so incredibly excited just to get a glimpse of her face. You throw notes at her head, and serenade her at recess. Nothing will come of it, you know, but still the feeling is there. The problem is, I am now in high school. Everyday I wake up with an inkling. I get excited to go to school, but when I arrive, her face is missing. That same frustrated desire returns to my chest. I want to be with her so badly, but I know that nothing can come of it. And yet, somthing has come of it. The past few months of my life have been filled with that something. We don't have a name for it, and its boundaries appear very loose to the wandering eye. Traditional boundaries are out of the question, but we have to find a way to eliminate the uncertainties. From her perspective, everything makes sense. She knows just how she feels, and where she wants things to go. This is good. The only problem is, I don't know just how she feels and where she wants things to go. I think I know how it is, but there are troubling aspects. I wish we could just talk, and from that talking understand all the dynamics of the situation. For instance, how is it that you can like somebody, and yet devote so much attention to others? When I like somebody, they are the primary recipeint of my interpersonl attention. I have been told that this is how it should be. And yet... there are guys that talk to her and hang out with her more than I do! Am I being selfish? I think I am. Life is so very exciting this way. I find it difficult to peel my mind off the subject of love. I have learned to deal with it, to go against instinct. All I can say to you is, let's bring it back. Make some more memories. I have been out. Out of my mind! I have let insecurity and doubt seep into me. Fabricating and exaggerating, I have allowed myself to loose composure. Blame it on the stress of school, the varying relationships of life, or the distance, I have faltered. I haven't been myself, and its killing me to go on like this. But now I am ready to return, and promise never to go back to that place. Let stress and selfishness be replaced with joy and love. Just as He wants for all of us... If you will give me the chance, things can go back to the way they were once upon a time. Call it casual love, or whatever you like, I will be there when you need. And even when you don't. You amaze me. Just thinking about it makes me want to be a better person. enjoy life. relax. just like allstate, you're in good hands...

This past weekend I visited the Windy City with a good friend and my Auntie (er, not really). Visiting the University of Chicago was an amazing experience. The extensive ivory covered Gothic architecture was even more reminiscent of Hogwarts than I had been anticipating! Observing a class entitled "Power Identity Resistance" gave Blake and myself a very intriguing look into an average University class. During the weekend I snapped about 400 pictures (much to the dismay of Auntie), so I will be periodically posting some on this blog, as well as facebook. Here are a few from the first quartile of shots. Enjoy!

I still loose my head and thoughts in the same peaceful melodies. Taking me back to easy times, in the country, in the summer. But things have changed, altered and expanded.... Below is an account of a few musical selections, describing what I see when I close my eyes, whilst listening.

I find myself today sitting in a grey abyss, a cloud enveloping my head. Days like this make it easy to forget what it feels like to be warm. But then, I turn my head and look at it in a different way. I sit down and plug in to mr. ipod. Death Cab for Cutie starts up, and soon slow drifting tunes wiggle their way about my head. Closing my lids I am no longer in grayness, but in a world of movement. Nature. The wild. This is big. I am sitting on the coast of scotland. A dark filter is placed over the lens of man's eye, and everything seems full of emotion. The sky billows wispy covers above the frothy black waters. Jagged stone blocks the force of the water from my skin, still a mist of moisture finds its way up, collecting in droplets about my hair. A gentle breeze moves the wild growth around me, nature's lawn. That is death cab alright, good stuff.

Next up is probably my favorite. I change the playlist to one named after her. Soon my chest is chalk full of emotions. Happiness bubbles up and explodes in my mind like fireworks. On the third of july at real. The fiery explosions rock me backward as things change. We grow and adjust. Before I know it, I am trapped in a salt water room, with no desire to leave its exhilarating randomness. We are driving down the dark roads at night, no real destination in mind. The only thing that matters is that she is by my side. She is trying her best to distract me from my thoughts. I love it. I take a jump, then fall onto her couch. She lands beside me. Images flash in front of us and she giggles. I pull her close and close my eyes. Breathe. I have to. Otherwise the moment is gone and I discover that she is no longer by my side. Regretfully I hop in my car and drive to a place of learning. You belong with me! Suddenly the dreary school day is not quite the same. I remember you and me. My daydream shifts to last weekend. This weekend. She is so fearless!! Time to wake.
By now most of you are thoroughly confused, as am I. It is so difficult to describe the phenomenon of emotion and music. Especially in a dreamer like me!

Acceptance & Heartbreak

This past week has been filled with glee... namely my acceptance into the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Feelings of relief, security, optimism, and excitement accompanied each admissions letter. Now for the heartbreak..... Today whilst skiing with Tanner, I had an encounter with a rock. No, not the good kind, the kind you soar over... No, the bad kind, the kind that snap skis like twigs. My left ski took the brunt of the impact, just underneath my boot. A four inch tear in the sidewall was the result. Unfortunately, I may not be able to ski for awhile, until costly replacements arrive. I have chosen to look at this as an opportunity to focus my attention elsewhere, towards running, school, friends, and others. I shall try to find some pictures of Chicago and Ann Arbor for you all to bask in. Check out "About BE" for some fantastic cameo shots of Blake and me, as we opened my acceptance letter from Chicago.

...or rather a new trip to Footlocker! I am incredibly excited to be leaving tomorrow for Walnut, California, to participate in the West Regional Footlocker Cross Country Championships. If any of you remember last year, things did not go so well, so I am hoping to redeem myself this year. I will certainly keep you posted, with an update upon my return. As we head out, a few things are on my mind....
-Impending due dates for applications
-Impending (or past) due dates for homework assignments, including IAs, and the big daddy, the extended essay.
-The race, of course.
-Girls (actually, A girl, cough cough)
-Friends that are going through turbulent times.
-Skiing!!! (Convulsions may ensue if we don't get some snow soon)

Where Art Thou, Winter?

Sitting in research, I gaze out the window into the gray abyss that the Salt Lake Valley has become. They sky is a monotone grey, occasionally pierced by a ray of light. Furthermore, every deciduous tree in the state has decided to shed its leaves, leaving behind countless skeletons of wood perched atop mulchy carpets. I find this transitional period between colorful fall and snowy winter very depressing. Where is the snow?! For months we have been deprived of nature's finest state of H20, leaving our mountains somewhat bare and exposed. With only a week left until opening day, the snow needs to come. Now!!

Time Together is Never Quite Enough

This phrase comes from one of my favorite songs, "The Saltwater Room" by Owl City. As I listen to these words, I can't help but to find them quite applicable to almost every faucet of my life. Senior year is rushing by at a pace that I find far to speedy. Somehow the cross country season is already gone, something that I find hard to conceptualize. Cross country has been an incredible experience that I shall not soon forget. From trail runs to the state championships, I have absolutely loved every step taken with my teammates; I am thankful for the awesome dudes we have on our team, and the friendships that have developed as a product of our hard work together. There is some sort of addictive feeling that I obtain from athletic competition, and I cannot wait until track rolls around so that we can start racing again! Anyways, the point trying to be made here is that one should enjoy every single moment in life while they last. It sounds cliche, but it is so very true! Amplified by the extremely busy schedules we all have, we can't forget to enjoy those free moments in life where we can simply enjoy each other's company. These are the moments that keep us sane, they keep us in touch with who we really are. Time with friends is so very valuable and essential to happiness, that we can't forget to squeeze it in whenever possible. This weekend was full of simple activities that ended up being super enjoyable. Football games, brownies, bike races, hockey games, hot chocolate, even church! Despite a week full of work that lies ahead, I am full of optimism. Don't forget, this Saturday is Halloween! I hope that this post has reminded you, the reader, to keep on smiling; life is good.
P.S. If you couldn't tell, I am getting stoked for winter!!

This past year has been incredible; I have met some amazing people, and have gotten to know others much better. That is the last name of my favorite actress. Pretty awesome right? Well, it fits. Anyways, I am writing this against my better judgement, for I know the teasing that may ensue this post. You see, Jennette McCurdy is one of the lead roles in iCarly, she plays Sam Puckett. iCarly is a great show, and if anyone out there has not seen it, I strongly recommend it. Sam is hilarious on this show, heck, everyone is! Gibby (Noah Munck) is another favorite of mine; these two have been keeping me entertained for hours this past week. Her hilarious antics and pranks on the show combined with the comical genius of Spencer (character on show) are the best I have seen on nickelodeon, or TV in general. Anyways, back to McCurdy. She also sings! As a budding country fan, I was a little hesitant at first, but have come to enjoy her soft melodies. I have become a huge fan of McCurdy, and hope that one day she may visit Utah (which may be relatively soon according to a friend).

Mackinac Island

Yesterday we went to an island in between Mainland Michigan and it's Upper Peninsula. Mackinac Island is accessible only by ferry, and thus, no cars are allowed on the island. Its roads were built for bikes, and so the streets are sized accordingly. Nevertheless, it has a thriving downtown, which reminded me oddly of Disneyland, as well as M-122, a road/bike path that circles the island in a 8 mile loop. The island is absolutely stunning, with quaint buildings littering the water front. Below are some pictures haphazardly snapped throughout the day on my bike.

Last night I headed out to USANA Amphitheatre in West Valley City with five friends to enjoy what would be a great concert by none other than The Fray. The night was particularly enjoyable because Matt returned yesterday from some six weeks in San Diego. But, anyways, The Fray. They are a great band with an incredible stage presence, utilizing simple light bulbs and camera work to create a very intimate atmosphere. The band leader, Isaac, started things off with the 2005 classic, "Over My Head", which had thousands of fans on their feet, singing along. As the night progressed, The Fray dove into their sentimental melodies with songs such as "How to Save a Life". After briefly leaving the stage, only to return for an encore, the band performed my personal favorite, a cover of Kanye West's "Heartless". This song was AMAZING, and I invite you to listen to it on my playlist located on the left side of the page. The concert reminded me of how much I love and enjoy music. Whether its thoughtful songs by the Fray & Death Cab for Cutie, electronic beats by Owl City (playlist) or Postal Service, or pump-up hip-hop by Kanye West, I love music!

Today marks the one year anniversary of Tha Marshall, so I thought I would do a little editing and bring out some eye-popping colors to celebrate the occasion, urban style. But first, a little shpeel about the blog. Tha Marshall was inspired by my good friend Andres, who first introduced me to blogging one year ago. I was fascinated and excited to share my photos and adventures with whoever was willing to read. The weather has been changing a whole lot recently, it has rained 8 out of the last 10 days! I am not complaining though, I love the rain. Here are some pictures from this morning, that reflect the varying sky cover...

The title of this post was inspired by Taylor Swift's "Change", which was the song I was listening to while writing the post, it is somewhat unrelated, but a great song!

Summit

"Which one?"
"That one." I say, pointing out a green lump in the distance.
We hop in a yellow Cadillac, and speed away towards the mountain. It is on the other side of the valley, barely within sight, for a layer of fog had descend upon the valley. Windows rolled down, blaring music, we drove. Before we knew it, we had found ourselves in unfamiliar territory.

Housing developments popped up around us, creating a cookie-cutter maze that was impossible to navigate. We had no directions, we just relied on our intuition, pointing the hood ornament towards our mountain whenever possible. Soon, we had found ourselves perched atop the highest neighborhood in Herriman, and at the foot of green beast that was our unexplored playground.

Initially sprinting up the hillside, we slowed to a pleasant walk, and continued to climb. All of a sudden, a great boom erupted in the sky above us. It sounded as if some daring percussionist had decided to play a set on the mountain top looming over us. Despite nervousness about an approaching storm, we plowed up the desert landscape. Every few minutes we paused to remove sharp thorns, there was no trail, only the space between sage. The hillside became steeper and steeper until it progressed into a rock climb. The only thing keeping us from turning around was the American flag perched atop the summit, a dazzling icon in a seemingly martian landscape. Finally, we had done it. The summit was within grasp.

A breathtaking view erased worries about thunder and the treacherous journey down as we gazed across the plains of Herriman and the Salt Lake Valley. Meditation was next in the agenda, and we took a moment to enjoy the first day of summer before heading down the slope.

It has been awhile. The past month has included bi-weekly track meets, stacks of homework, and the first of my four IB/AP tests. Thus, my blog and picture taking have been somewhat neglected. But this past weekend I was able to enjoy the long awaited spring, and spend a few hours outdoors simply relaxing and enjoying the great weather. There is something about spring that brings out the best of people. I wish I could just live outside during these few weeks of perfect weather! But alas, life's realities tie me down far too often. All I can say is, enjoy the spring while it lasts, and spend time with some good friends. A little bit of a tangent, but I realize that I have been neglecting many people these past few weeks and months, and I apologize, and resolve to renew old frindships while creating new ones! Anyways, Happy Spring!

FBLA

This past Thursday and Friday we went up to good ol' Ogden, Utah, for State FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). For two days we competed and, uh, networked with other chapters from around the state. Hillcrest did exceptionally well, with most members placing in the top ten in at least one of their events. Seven people qualified for nationals, placing in the top two of their event. This is more than any other club in the state! As President, I can say that I am extremely proud. Below are a few photos from the trip, but I must admit, my collection is rather incomplete; I couldn't find time to take many pictures running between events and on top of that, my battery died. But check out facebook for 200+ pictures, or one of the many blogs on my blogroll for additional pictures... (P.S. I took first at marketing, which was extremely surprising, considering I only took fourth at region, and it is my worst event! Anyhow, I will be attending the national conference in Anaheim in June!)

HAve you ever wondered what is was like to ski through the eyes of Brad? Well, now you can find out! On Friday, Tanner and I went up to Alta to test out my new helmet-cam. I was impressed by the video quality, despite it falling off half-way through the day. As I learn how to use it better, the videos will hopefully improve. nevertheless, I think the edit turned out pretty well....

That is what we called ourselves; The Unstoppables. Well, not really. But it sounds catchy, eh? Derek emailed me this picture of fifth grade debate at Regionals. It brought back so many great memories about the debate and elementary school in general... My little tie, the black binder, Mrs. Sudbury and her Jazz fetish. Those were the good old days. I can't help but to wish we were still there, considering all the fun that was had. I fondly remember playing baseball, soccer, football, and DING BALL at recess. If only we had half an hour breaks to relax these days... Elementary school was also marked by great teachers, little to no homework, great great friends, and of course, debate trophies.

Oh, and not to mention, how much more attractive I was...
